ACGT/DEFF Bioprospecting Forum
Oct 23 @ 9:00 am - 1:30 pm
A discussion about Bioprospecting permit frameworks as they relate to your current work as a Life Scientist/Researcher
The African Centre for Gene Technologies (ACGT) and the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) are inviting you to participate in a forum intended to give an overview of the national legislative provisions on bioprospecting, access and benefit sharing and biodiversity in South Africa and address the concerns of the Life Science researchers on how these relate to their work.
“Bioprospecting involves the searching for, collecting, harvesting and extracting of living or dead indigenous species or derivatives and genetic material thereof for commercial or industrial purposes.”
There seems to be a need for this information sharing session between the DEFF personnel and life science researchers on the regulations in place and what they are intended to achieve. The forum aims to improve the communication between the two parties, improve the limited understanding of Bioprospecting, Access and Benefit Sharing regulatory frameworks and ensure that interests are aligned.
These are some of the topics that would be discussed:
- Bioprospecting and Biodiversity in South Africa
- Regulatory frameworks for Bioprospecting, Access and Benefit Sharing
- Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing
- Permitting System
- Compliance and Enforcement
- Benefits of Regulating Bioprospecting
- Round Table Discussions to address concerns.
