THE ACGT DATABASE

The ACGT database is a compilation of biosciences research skills, techniques and specialised equipment of scientists at the University of Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, CSIR, University of Johannesburg and the Agricultural Research Council. ACGT is instrumental in creating an awareness of the regional research activities and programmes. It was created to stimulate coordination of research efforts between the partner institutions and provide a platform for future collaborations.

Research Programme Detail

Research Programme NameMolecular Epidemiology & Zoology
Research Programme DescriptionWorking on identifying and characterising infectious agents in wildlife, due to it's increasingly growing transmission of disease at the wildlife-livestock and wildlife-human interface and also at the profound effect that disease outbreaks have on vulnerable wildlife populations. Projects involve elucidating genetic structuring within vertebrate and invertebrate taxa as a means of identifying appropriate management units and the use of temporal, geographical and host, pathogen variation to clarify the persistence and spread of infectious agents, thereby assisting with the identification of appropriate disease management strategies.
Research Programme TechniquesReal-time PCR, Phylogenetic analysis, Diagnostic PCR development
Research Programme KeywordsPCR, nucleotide sequencing, phylogenetic analysis, diagnostics, method development, bacteria, viruses, host-pathogen dynamics, taxonomy.
