Thulani Dlamini


Dr Thulani Dlamini is the Group Executive of Research and Development at the CSIR. He has recently been appointed as the CSIR representative on the ACGT Executive Board and also serves on the ACGT Advisory Committee.

His portfolio within the CSIR includes strengthening R&D in the organisation, R&D strategy, emerging research areas, strategic research partnerships and information services. Before being appointed to this position, Thulani provided strategic leadership to the CSIR National Laser Centre for two years. He joined the CSIR from Sasol, where he had been chief scientist and group leader in the chemistry division.

Among Thulani’s qualifications are a PhD (Chemistry) from the University of the Witwatersrand and an MBL from UNISA. He attended the Mastering Technology Enterprise advanced course in Lausanne, Switzerland in 2007 and completed a course on technology, markets and economics in the petrochemical industry with the Princeton Oxford Programme in 2004.

Thulani led the establishment of the Photonics Initiative of South Africa including the development of a national strategy for photonics RDI.  He was recently inducted as a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa.

He is currently Chair of the steering committee for the South African photonics initiative; sits on the Board of the Automotive Industry Development Centre; and is Chair of the Board of Directors of the African Laser Centre. In 2007 Thulani also served as a member of the international scientific advisory board of the first international conferences on lasers and plasma applications in materials science.

Thulani holds five patents and has published a number of articles in scientific journals.
